New York Knicks History

The Knicks are a storied franchise of the NBA despite not having won a championship since 1973 and two championships overall, the other in 1970. Part of the allure of the franchise is the fact that it is located in New York which is considered the mecca of basketball. The Knicks have fielded several competitive and contending teams throughout their history. They have also been lead by a multitude of star players over the years. In the early 70s they were lead to Championships by hall-of-fame players Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, and Earl "The Pearl" Monroe. The team fell off a bit in the late 70s though they had some excitement in the mid 80s when lead by hall-of-fame player Bernard King before his career was derailed by a devastating knee injury. The fortunes turned quickly after acquiring center Patrick Ewing with the #1 overall pick in the 1985 NBA draft. The team would be built around Ewing and turn into a powerhouse during the 90s. During the Ewing era they would reach the NBA finals in 1994, but fall to the Houston Rockets in 7 games. In the late 90s as Ewing aged the team would be built around forward Larry Johnson and all-star swing men Alan Houston and Latrell Sprewell. They would even reach the finals again in the lockout shortened 1999 season, but fall to the Spurs in 5 games. Mismanagement by executive and coach Isaiah Thomas lead to years of mediocrity following the Ewing era. The current Knicks led by Carmelo Anthony had a modicum of success, before falling on hard times during the last season. New team president, coaching legend, and former Knick, Phil Jackson hopes to turn it around going forward.
