Florida Gators vs. Maine Black Bears Recap

Dane Dunning had another strong start Sunday for Florida, helping the Gators to a series sweep over Maine. Over five innings, Dunning allowed only Shane Bussey's RBI single in the fifth. He is 4-0 this season with a 1.29 ERA. With Florida leading 4-1, the Black Bears rallied for two runs in the seventh. After Brendan Geary led off with a home run, Bussey singled with one out, then came around to score on Brett Chappell's two-out double. But Maine couldn't tie the game, and fell to 4-12 after Taylor Lewis shut them down for his fourth save. For the second-ranked Gators, who are 14-2, Dalton Guthrie and Richie Martin each had three hits.

A.J. Puk had a strong start and Danny Young was lights-out in relief, leading the Florida Gators to a series-clinching win Saturday over Maine. Puk allowed Luke Morrill's solo homer in the fifth but shut down the Black Bears otherwise, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out six in 5.2 innings. Puk improved to 3-1 and lowered his ERA to 3.72. Young came in with the bases loaded in the sixth and got Morrill to ground out, then faced the minimum nine batters in the final three innings to get his first save. Logan Shore pitched eight shutout innings, leading Florida to a home win Friday night over Maine. Shore allowed just five hits and didn't walk a batter. He is now 3-0 on the season and has not allowed a run in 19.1 innings pitched. The Gators offense gave Shore a 4-0 lead in the second inning when six hitters in a row reached base, helped by three Maine errors. Christian Hicks provided the only other scoring in the sixth with a solo home run, his first of the season. Florida improved to 12-2. For Maine, who fell to 4-10, starting pitcher Justin Courtney (0-4) was the hard-luck loser after allowing four unearned runs.
