Arizona State led for most of the game, but Zack Rivera's three-run homer in the eighth was the difference as Long Beach State upset the 17th-ranked Sun Devils Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Arizona State took the lead early when leadoff batter Jonathan Sewald was hit by a pitch and came around to score on R.J. Ybarra's two-out single. In the sixth, Sewald led off with a walk and scored on Trever Allen's two-out single. Sun Devils starter Ryan Kellogd had shut out the 49ers through seven frames, but the Sun Devils went to their bullpen when the first two 49er batters reached in the eighth. Rivera then homered off reliever Jordan Aboites (0-2). Alex Bishop tripled in the ninth for Long Beach and scored an insurance run on Jonathan Serven's single. Austin McGeorge (2-0) won it in relief, and Ty Provencher got his fourth save for LBSU.

Darin Gillies pitched three scoreless innings in relief, helping Arizona State to a win Friday night over Long Beach State in the teams' series opener. The 17th-ranked Sun Devils improved to 8-4, while Long Beach State fell to 8-5. Long Beach State's offense all came on one hit, but it was a big one as Eric Hutting hit a grand slam in the fourth inning off Sun Devils starter Seth Martinez. That made it 4-3 in favor of LBSU, but Arizona State tied it on an unearned run in the bottom of the inning and then took the lead on Trever Ybarra's RBI double in the fifth. With the home team leading 6-4, Gillies came on for the next nine outs in a key relief appearance before Ryan Burr pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
