Sixth-ranked Auburn got a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, then held on in overtime to avoid an embarrassing loss against Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks clearly were ready for their first-ever meeting against Auburn, while the Tigers played poorly for most of the afternoon. With 5:38 to play in the game, Jacksonville State went ahead 20-13 on Troymaine Pope's five-yard touchdown run. Auburn's Jeremy Johnson then tied the game with a ten-yard touchdown pass to Melvin Ray with just 39 seconds remaining. Peyton Barber's four-yard touchdown run in overtime won the game for Auburn. Barber finished with 125 yards on 23 carries. Jacksonville State quarterback Eli Jenkins threw for 277 yards.

On the first game of the season for Michigan State they came out strong against the lowly Jacksonville St squad. By the end of the first quarter Michigan State was already leading by three touchdowns thanks to three touchdown passes from Connor Cook. 2 to Tony Lippett and 1 to AJ Troup. In the second quarter the running game took over. Nick Hill scampered for a 17 Yard TD and an 8 Yard TD with 12:43 and 5:01 minutes remaining in the half. Michael Geiger added a 35 yd field goal right as the halftime whistle blew to give Michigan State a 38-0 halftime lead. Jacksonville State had one lone bright spot of the day with 11:37 to go in the third quarter as Max Shortell connected with Markis Merril for a 9 yard TD pass.
