Oklahoma Sooners vs. Akron Zips Recap

Oklahoma used a potent passing gmae and strong pass defense to earn a blowout win over Akron in both teams' season opener. Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield completed 23 of 33 passes for 388 yards and three touchdowns, and the 19th-ranked Sooners allowed Akron to complete only six of 26 passing attempts for 88 yards. The Sooners averaged only three yards a run but had enough firepower in the air to put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Joe Mixon's 76-yard touchdown reception provided the Sooners' best highlight of the day. Akron scored only once, on Robert Stein's 26-yard field goal at the end of the first half.

On Tuesday November 25th the Penn State Nittany Lions hosted the Akron Zips. Noah Robotham had 18 points to lead the Zips but was only 6 of 15 shooting from the floor. Deji Ibitayo had 17 off the bench going 4 of 7 from the floor and 8 of 9 from the foul line while also grabbing 6 rebounds. Penn State got a game high 29 from DJ Newbill who was 8 of 12 from the floor and 12 of 15 from the foul line. Newbill had a nice all around game as he also had 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

Coming into the game, Penn State was 2-0 and Akron was 1-1. This was an out of conference game at Beaver Stadium in State College, PA and Penn State was heavily favored. To start, it was a rather close game, with the score after 2 quarters of play only 7-0 Penn State. As the second half began Penn State began to mesh and play much better, totaling 425 yards by the game's end. Christian Hackenberg threw for 319 yards and had 3 touchdowns, while Penn State also added 106 yards on the ground. Akron only had 277 total yards of offense during the contest.
